Scouts climb Mt. Anne.

November 1977

Huonville Venturer Scout Unit climbed South West Tasmania's highest peak, Mt. Anne.

Mr. Alton Bond of Huonville writes, "We arrived at Condominium Creek, Lake Pedder at 7.45 p.m. Friday, 25th November. In the Venturer Unit were A. Bond, S. Cordwell, T. Roberts, D. Hutchins and M. Woolveridge. They set out to climb to the High Camp Memorial Hut on Mt. Eliza.
After capturing a most beautiful red sunset (with cameras!) at dusk we then experienced the rising of a full moon beyond Mt. Anne. After a tiring climb, we reach the hut at 10.15 p.m. and bedded down for the night.
We rose to a clear Saturday and after a hearty breakfast packed our lunch and climbed to the top of Mt. Eliza Plateau. After a short rest we journeyed on, walking on cushion plants, pineapple grass. Midway between Mt. Eliza and Mt. Anne we came to a sheer cliff face which falls two thousand feet into the still waters of Lake Judd. Lake Judd has Mt. Eliza on its west side Mt. Anne and Mt. Lot on to the north, Mt. Sarah Jane on the east and Schnell's Ridge at its southern end. The Anne River runs from Lake Judd into the Huon. As we approached our objective we came across several drifts of fast melting snow. After a stiff climb along some ledges we gained the top of Mt. Anne, and before us was the whole Panorama of the South West Wilderness. Looking east we gazed upon the Snowy Mts. and continuing around towards the south and west we saw, to name but a few, Mt. Weld, The Hartz, Adamsons Peak, Pinders Peak, Mt. Bobs, Mt Picton, Mt.Frederick, Precipitous Bluff, The Iron Bounds, Federation Peak, The Arthur Ranges, Port Davey, The Franklands, Wilmot Range, Mt. Wedge. The Thumbs, Frenchmans Cap, and many more.
After a short rest, we left our names in the cairn, and journeyed back to the high camp hut on the slopes of Mt. Eliza which looks out over Lake Pedder. Sunday brought some nasty weather so we finished breakfast and broke camp and after a quick journey down to the Scotts Peak Road we headed back for Huonville in pouring rain which frequents this piece of Gods Country of South West Tasmania."

Scout Leader Promoted.

Mr. Max Burton has been promoted from scout leader of the 1st Huonville Scout Group to group leader. Mr Burton, who has been assistant and scout leader for the past 15 years, recently received his 10-year service badge from the Huon District Commissioner, Mr. Brian Woolveridge.
Assistant leader, Robert England, was made scout leader to replace Mr. Burton. Recent activities of  the group have included hikes up Mt. Wellington and into Waterworks Reserve. Scouts and leaders took part in a display of hobbies and activities. Exhibits included stamp and coin collections, a display of model planes and wool spinning.
The committee are running a bottle collection to raise money for a new room on the scout hall. Anyone wanting to get rid of bottles is asked to drop them at the scout hall anytime. The group is also looking for a new leader.

Scout's Project

A group of Venturer Scouts at Huonville earnt enough money working in Roberts' canning factory at Glen Huon to finance their project to build 5 kayaks in the school holidays. Under the supervision of Mr D. Roberts, the boys hope to organise a canoeing journey down the Huon River, from Tahune bridge, later on in the year. The 5 boys are pictured with their completed kayaks, (l-r) Drew Lynch, Andrew Folmer, Philip Dawson, Andrew Griggs and Tony Roberts.

Venturers Trek.

A party of three Huonville venturers walked through Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park earlier this month. The party climbed several mountains enroute, including Mt. Ossa, Mt. Oakleigh and the Acropolis. They also visited Lake Will and a number of waterfalls which were quite spectacular. The party slept in the huts provided at the end of each day's walk.
According to Venturer, Andrew Griggs, mosquitoes and march flies "nearly drove them crazy" but could not spoil the walk.

Top award for Venturers.

Two and a half years work paid off last week for Tony Roberts of Glen Huon, and Andrew Griggs of Lucaston, when they received their Queen's Scout badges.

The boys who belong to the 1st Huonville Venturer Unit, are the first to receive scouting's highest award in the Huon for 15 years. To win the award, Tony, aged 17 and Andrew, 16, worked on projects in 10 different areas for 2 1/2 years. The activities covered community services, expeditions, vocations, fitness, ideals and environment. Both did 50 hours community work with Apex and Lions members. Tony went to New Zealand with an Australian New Zealand Exploring Society for a course on mountaineering and snow and ice rescue. Both boys climbed Federation Peak. They received their badges from the District Commissioner, Mr. Brian Woolveridge, at a barbecue tea by the Huon river on Friday evening. The tea was attended by Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies celebrating the birthday of the late Lord Baden Powell, who founded the scouting movement.
