A Founder's Day Service to commemorate the anniversary of the commencement of Guiding and Scouting was held on the banks of the Huon River on Mr. Kevin Pitt's property at Huonville on Sunday, 21st February. Huonville Guides, Scouts, Cubs and Brownies were present and heard a message read from the Governor General who is the Chief Scout of Australia. Others attending included the District Commissioner for Guides (Miss Kathy Cane), the District Scout Leader (Mr. Max Burton), and the Acting District Scout Commissioner for the Huon (Mr. Lawson Wilcox). Huonville Scout Leaders Kevin Pitt and Doug Crowe, Guide Leader Mrs. Jill Lancaster, and Cub 1eaders, Mrs. Kay Crowe and Mrs. V. Baldwin were also there, along with many parents. Unfortunately, due to fire restrictions, the planed barbeque was unable to be held. Some of those at the Founders Day service were pictured.

Job Week
The Scouting movement has given a face-lift to Bob-a-Job, or as it has been recently known, Job Week. The scheme has been extended to four weeks and. as a trial, this year will be organised over the month of September. Job Week was formerly run in the May school holidays but it was found that the boys were faced with too many conflicting interests at that time of the year. In another change to the scheme, all funds raised, will remain with the local group which raised them. In the past one-half of the funds raised were passed on to headquarters to cover administration costs. Scouts will be on the move in Geeveston, Huonville and Cygnet over the next four weeks and householders are asked to check that boys are in correct uniform and have their official job cards which householders are asked to fill out upon the completion of a job. The scouts are awarded a series of four badges as they progress through, earning $30 or completing 38 jobs. "Scout Job Weeks" are the boys contribution to the costs of their training and donations as such are discouraged the scouting movement hopes that the community will support the boys in their efforts to “pay their way". In our picture Huonville cubs (from left to right) Christopher Crowe, Adrian Crowe, Jason Ley and Adrian Ley are hard at work in their Job Weeks effort.

The service, at the Huonville Scout and Guide Hall, was just one of the many held around the world to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Scouting’s founder, Lord Baden Powell. Guest speaker at the Huonville service was former District Commissioner for Guides, Miss. Nathalie Norris, who spoke on the life of Lady Baden Powell. During the service District Commissioner, Lawson Wilcox read a letter from the Chief Scout in Australia, Governor General, Ninian Steven.
