1st Tasmanian Cuboree

Adrian Crowe, 9, of Huonville, left, and Alex Wilcox, 10, of East Launceston, were all smiles after the first Tasmanian Cuboree. The Cuboree was held during the weekend at the Lea near Hobart and attracted 300 cub scouts from throughout the state. The event was organised for the oldest cubs, aged 9 or 10. Axemanship, tent pitching, cooking, a flying fox, orienteering and water activities at Margate kept them busy.

Ist Huonville and 1st Cygnet Cub Scouts were recently among three hundred Cub Scouts from throughout Tasmania who attended a "Cuboree" at the Lea. The boys participated in Scouting activities, and many interesting comments were made, including the following: "I enjoyed when I went on the flying fox and built rafts by doing a reef knot. Also enjoyed the nature trail with rocks piled and sticks broken and arrows pointing which way to go. I loved when we gathered around the camp fire and sang songs and told stories. I really enjoyed it for my first time on a Cub camp,"- Luke. "I liked water activities, we made rafts with sticks and tubes and we went on rowing boats. When I was going on the flying fox I was nervous and the leaders had a go. I liked the camp fire and singing songs,"-Timothy. " We went down to Margate for boating and we built a raft. While we were rafting peacefully our raft fell apart and we were left floating in the water with our life jackets on,"-Ian.  "I liked the flying fox which went across the dam, and Scouts caught us on the other side,"-Phillip. "I enjoyed best the water activities, making rafts and putting it in the water. It was great fun," -Michael.  "On the Cuboree camp I enjoyed the canoeing and flying fox and sleeping in the tent,"-Chris. "I enjoyed the canoeing, the camp fire and flying fox and sleeping in tents and cooking," Adrian. "At the Cuboree I liked the kayaking and the camp fire, the flying fox was good,"-Jason.   "At the Cuboree I enjoyed the kayaking, the camp fire and the flying fox,"-Joshua.

Honours at field day

Huon District Scout and Guides commemorated the 25th birthday of the Huonville Scout and Guide Hall on September 27 when they held a District Field Day. Scouting and guiding personnel from throughout Tasmania attended as the local scouts and guides demonstrated the skills and art of their activities.

The culmination of the day was the unveiling of the G. N. Stilwell Honour Roll  which records the names of all scout and guide leaders warranted in the Huon since 1961. The Honour Roll will also serve as a memorial to the significance of the late Mr. Geoffrey Stilwell's contribution to scouting in the district. Mr. Stilwell’s widow, Mrs Dorothy Stilwell, performed the official unveiling of the honour roll and spoke of her husband’s selfless work for the movement and of her hope that others would continue to contribute. The youngest Brownie presented Mrs. Stilwell with a posy. Tasmanian Chief Commissioner Mr. John Phipps unveiled the Scouts Award Roll and the Tasmanian Guides' State Commissioner Mrs Molly Campbell Smith performed the unveiling of the two Guides Award Rolls. The Committee of the Scout and Guide Hall afterwards expressed their gratitude to the many people who had assisted in the organisation and operation of the field day and especially thanked the many scouts, cubs, guides and brownies and their leaders for the effort put towards the success of the day.
